Characterization of the pathogen population structure of bacterial leaf blight of rice in West Africa as a prerequisite for the identification and deployment of durable resistance
Goal: To develop an integrated management program for bacterial leaf blight based on varietal resistance and sound knowledge of the pathogen's population structure in order to contribute to securing stable and high-yielding rice production in smallholder rice farmers' fields. Purpose: To eliminate the information gap that has hampered the use of resistant varieties in an IPM approach for reducing BLB impact under African conditions.

Improved and sustainable nutrient management of irrigated rice-based cropping systems in West Africa
Major Research Domain: Nutrient management, sustainable cropping systems, rice production Goal: Contribution to a sustainable increase of productivity and profitability of irrigated rice-based cropping systems in West Africa through improved nutrient management tailored to local biophysical and socioeconomic settings Outputs: - To assess agronomic and socioeconomic contributors to yield loss at key irrigation schemes in West Africa (key sites) - To assess the degree of soil fertility mining at the key sites

The evolution of agricultural systems in the peri-urban lowlands of West Africa and the development of policy and technologies for their sustainable intensified use
As of 7/2003: Factors influencing the development trajectories of lowlands in West Africa (The evolution of agricultural systems in the peri-urban lowlands of West Africa and the development of policy and technologies for their sustainable intensified use) Major Research Domain: Peri-urban production systems, sustainable agriculture, policy Goal: Sustainable intensification of peri-urban lowland rice-based production systems Outputs: - To identify areas and conditions favoring lowland intensification/diversification through field survey and farm level, participatory studies - To develop technologies and decision aids that reduce tradeoffs between economic performance and environment risks
