Major causes of decline in maize production are pests and diseases which affect the crop both in field and storage. For instant, maize is facing an uncertain future following a fast spreading maize disease that threatens its production across the country. The maize disease, now identified as Maize Lethal Necrotic (MLN) disease is caused by a combination of viruses and was first reported in lower Longisa division of Bomet district in September 2011.
The disease, which is caused by a combination of Sugarcane Mosaic Virus and Maize Chlorotic Mottle Virus, makes the maize plant to wither and wilt before maturity. Plants appear weak, start shrinking with leaves turning yellowish and eventually they fall off and dry.
