The climate of Lesotho is generally classified as temperate grassland. The highlands areas experience severe winters with ground frost of up to 200 days per year and such conditions limit the scope of crop production and diversity. The annual rainfall ranges from 600mm-800mm of which 85% falls between October and April. The temperature varies from place to place according to the altitude and decreases with increasing elevation.
