Welcome to the Mountain Kingdom

The Kingdom of Lesotho is a small mountainous country (30,555 square km) with an estimated population of 1.8 Million and is completely surrounded by the Republic of South Africa. Lesotho is unique in most countries of the world because of its highest altitude, approximately between 1,500m and 3, 480 meters above sea level and between 28º35’and 30º40’S and 27º00’and 29º30’E longitude. The country is divided into four agro-ecological zones/regions, that is: Lowlands, Foothills, Mountains and the Senqu River Valley.

The climate of Lesotho is generally classified as temperate grassland. The highlands areas experience severe winters with ground frost of up to 200 days per year and such conditions limit the scope of crop production and diversity. The annual rainfall ranges from 600mm-800mm of which 85% falls between October and April. The temperature varies from place to place according to the altitude and decreases with increasing elevation.
