(a) Corporate Status : The Irrigation Authority is a para-statal body set up under the Irrigation Authority Act No. 39 of 1978 and functions under the Ministry of Agro Industry, Food Production & Security, with the responsibility for the development of the public sector irrigation.
(b) Mission : Our principal mission is to provide a quality service to the planters’ community. Through our shared commitment we will serve professionally with a view to improve the welfare of the planters.
(c) Services offered : Provision of irrigation facilities to the small planters’ community.
To date the Irrigation Authority is operating 18 projects covering about 4170 ha under different methods of irrigation (overhead sprinkler: centre pivot, solid set and drag line; subsurface :drip)
(d) Activities : (i) Feasibility Study, Investigation, Planning, Design, Preparation and Floating/Receipt of Bids and Evaluation of Bids, Project Management/ Supervision of Construction Works for installation of irrigation infrastructure in fields of planters.
(ii) Operation, Management and Maintenance of irrigation infrastructure.
(iv) Training of planters and formation of Water Users Associations/Cooperative Societies for day to day operation of the projects.
(v) Provision of incentives to planters.
(e) Experience : 30 years in the domain of providing irrigation services to farmers through different methods of irrigation.
(f) Core staff : Qualified and experienced engineers and agronomists with all back up and logistic support.
(g) Incentives to
Planters’ Community: (i) Provision of irrigation at subsidised rates to planters within irrigation areas under the jurisdiction of Irrigation Authority;
(ii) Provision of drippers at duty-free prices to planters within irrigation areas under the jurisdiction of Irrigation Authority;
(iii) Certification through the Ministry of Agro Industry, Food Production & Security for remission of duties to planters for purchasing of irrigation equipment and goods;
(iv) Recommendation for partial reimbursement of pumping costs to planters using electrically driven pumps for irrigation of food crops; and
(v) Advice to planters on matters related to land and water management, with particular reference to Irrigation Water Management.
