We have 19 Extension Planning Areas namely Chigonthi, Chilaza, Chileka, Chitekwere, Chitsime, Chiwamba, Demera, Malingunde, Ming'ongo, Mitundu, Mkwinda, Mlomba, Mngwangwa, Mpenu, Mpingu, Nthondo, Nyanja, Thawale and Ukwe. There are 320 sections in total. The district has 443 670 farming families with a population of about 1.7 million. There is a total land area of 921 708 hectares of which 626 049 hectares are customary arable land, 17 259 hectares are forest reserves and 278 400 hectares are under freehold.
