Lilongwe District Agriculture Development Office has 19 Extension Planning Areas (EPA) namely Chigonthi, Chilaza, Chileka, Chitekwere, Chitsime, Chiwamba, Demera, Malingunde, Ming'ongo, Mitundu, Mkwinda, Mlomba, Mngwangwa, Mpenu, Mpingu, Nthondo, Nyanja, Thawale and Ukwe. There are a total of 320 sections. The district has 443 670 farming families with a population of about 1.7 million. Ther is a total land area of 921 708 hectares of which 626 046 hectares is customary arable land, 17 257 hectares is forest reserve and 278 400 hectares is freehold land.
