The Eastern agro-ecological Zone is comprised of four regions (Morogoro, Coast, Tanga & Dar es Salaam) six Municipal councils (Morogoro, Kibaha, Tanga, Temeke, Ilala & Kinondoni) and 19 district councils (Morogoro rural, Mvomero, Kilosa, Gairo, Kilombero, Ulanga, Kisarawe, Bagamoyo, Kibaha-rural, Rufiji, Mkuranga. Mafya, Pangani, Handeni, Kilindi, Korogwe, Muheza, Lushoto & Mkinga.
Eastern zone has six research institutes under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives and one livestock research centre under the Ministry of Livestock Development and Fisheries. Agricultural Research Institute-Ilonga is the Zonal centre which coordinates research activities for research institutes in the Eastern agro-ecological zone, including Chollima Agro-Scientific Research Institute-Dakawa-Morogoro, Agricultural Research Institute-Kibaha-Coast, Mikocheni Agricultural Research Institute-Dar es Salaam, Kilombero Agricultural Training and Research Institute-KATRIN Morogoro, Agricultural Research Institute Mlingano-Tanga and Agricultural Research Institute-Ilonga-Morogoro. Livestock research in the zone is done by Livestock Research Centre (LRC) -Tanga. Apart from these research institutions, Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL), Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Research Institute (TTRI) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) which also conduct research and have national mandate that are based in the Eastern Zone.
