KEEMBE PIGGERY
The Keembe piggery unit is situated 70 km north of Lusaka and 30 km off the Great North Road. The piggery is built on 12 ha land and is in close proximity to the Farms Training Centre. The unit was established to produce breeding stock for sale to farmers and for teaching purposes. The unit has a capacity of 200 sows and the potential to produce 4,000 porkers/baconers per annum. The current production level 120 sows unit. The Centre has an average monthly output of 80 porkers and 15 In-pig gilts.
The Centre’s main activities are:
· Producing breeding stock for sell to farmers.
· Supporting capacity building for outgrower farmers through training. On the job training (practical training) is offered to interested persons.
· Supportungsupport integrated pig production and out-door pig production systems.
The Centre specializes in two breeds namely, Large White and Land Race. The following types of pigs are available at any given time for sale:
In-pig gilts, Empty gilts, Breeding Boars, Porkers and Baconers
